12-month Co-Op with York Region Transit.

Project Coordinator

What motivated you to apply for co-op/Internship?

I was motivated to apply for this co-op/internship opportunity primarily due to the valuable experience I gained during my previous internship at York Region Transit. As this marks my second internship, I recognized the importance of continuous learning and growth. My time at York Region Transit provided me with a strong foundation in transit operations, team collaboration, and problem-solving skills. I believe that the skills and knowledge I acquired there can be applied effectively in a different role, contributing to the success of a new organization while further advancing my professional development. This co-op/internship presents a fresh challenge and the chance to expand my horizons, making it an exciting and motivating prospect for my career growth.

Can you describe your position in a few sentences?

In my role at Clearwater Structures Inc, I held a multifaceted position where I focused on the integration of robotic systems. This involved creating and implementing innovative solutions to calculate variables like pressure, temperature, and load cell deformations. Additionally, I employed IMU sensors to accurately calculate the position of these systems. Furthermore, I developed a user-friendly GUI interface for controlling these robotic systems, and I integrated advanced sensor technologies such as sonar, LiDAR, and camera systems, enhancing their capabilities and functionality. This role allowed me to work on diverse aspects of technology and automation, contributing to the company's advancements in the field.

Did you receive training to perform your engineering duties? Please explain.

I received basic HR safety training, but apart from that, I didn't undergo any specific engineering training for my role at Clearwater Structures Inc. My learning and expertise were primarily acquired through on-the-job experiences, research, and self-study. This approach allowed me to gain practical, hands-on knowledge in the field of robotics, electronics, and sensor integration during my internship. It was a great opportunity to apply what I had learned in my academic studies to real-world engineering challenges.

What was your work atmosphere like?

The work atmosphere at Clearwater Structures Inc was characterized by flexibility and a dynamic blend of research and development. It was an environment where adaptability and innovation were encouraged. The work involved a significant focus on research and development, requiring us to explore new ideas and technologies to enhance our robotic crawler. This research aspect was complemented by the practical application, where we had to meticulously implement our findings to make the robotic crawler fully functional. This combination of flexibility and the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology made for an engaging and stimulating work environment.

What new skills were you able to learn/develop during your co-op/internship?

During my co-op/internship at Clearwater Structures Inc, I had the opportunity to learn and develop several valuable skills. These included circuit design, where I gained proficiency in designing electronic circuits. I also honed my skills in microcontrollers, which are essential for controlling various aspects of the robotic crawler. Additionally, I learned how to work with relays, which are crucial components for automation and control systems. One of the most rewarding experiences was integrating old legacy systems with new modern Ethernet systems, which enhanced my ability to bridge the gap between traditional and cutting-edge technologies. These skills have not only expanded my technical expertise but have also provided me with a holistic understanding of electronics and systems integration, which I believe will be invaluable in my future career.

How did your experience compare with your expectations?

My experience at Clearwater Structures Inc was quite distinct from my expectations, especially when compared to my previous internship at York Region Transit. At York Region Transit, the atmosphere was more structured and professional, with established procedures and a team of experienced colleagues to rely on for guidance and support. In contrast, my time at Clearwater demanded a significant shift in expectations. The responsibility for innovation and problem-solving was largely placed on the individual, which meant a higher degree of independence and self-driven initiative. It was a challenging yet rewarding change, as I had to take the lead in developing solutions and pushing the boundaries of what I knew. This shift taught me to be more adaptable and resourceful, and it emphasized the importance of self-reliance and creativity in a dynamic work environment.

What was your proudest moment?

My proudest moment during my internship at Clearwater Structures Inc was when I successfully got the robot to move on the first try. While the circuit involved may have been relatively simple, the journey to that moment was anything but. The process of developing, researching, and troubleshooting potential causes of issues, as well as integrating new control technologies, was a challenging and intricate endeavor. Seeing the robot come to life and move as intended was immensely rewarding. It represented the culmination of my hard work, problem-solving, and innovation, and it reinforced my passion for engineering and technology.

What advice would you offer to current students thinking about pursuing co-op or internship?

I would strongly advise current students to pursue co-op or internship opportunities without hesitation. These experiences not only provide valuable insights and hands-on learning but also serve as an excellent platform to build relationships and potentially secure job opportunities for post-graduation. In the field of engineering, I personally recommend considering an internship after the third year when you have a more substantial knowledge base to maximize your learning and contributions. However, it's essential to carefully read and evaluate the job description to ensure that the position aligns with your career goals and interests, rather than being swayed solely by the company's reputation. Choosing the right fit for your skills and aspirations is crucial for a rewarding and productive internship experience.
