Mechatronics Engineering Student

12-month Co-Op with York Region Transit

Transit Management Systems Officer

What motivated you to apply for a co-op/internship?

I attended a coop meeting in first year and got some advice from an upper-year student. They had accomplished my goals so I’m following in their footsteps. Also learning not everything is academics in the real world.

Can you describe your position in a few sentences?

I provide technical and field support for the operation and maintenance of ITS hardware, software and technology infrastructure in areas such as Automated Fare Collection, Variable Messaging Signs, CCTV, Public Announcement Systems, Computer-Aided Dispatching and Automated Vehicle Location. I also create software compatible files or data to support changes to the systems software due to expansion and/or changes in Transit services (i.e. new routes, new buses, etc.), such as MP3 files, station GPS coordinate files, etc.

Did you receive training to perform your engineering duties? Please explain.

Every new job requires some sort of training. Mine was basic corporate training along with WIMIS and Drivers ED.

What was your work atmosphere like?

Very flexible. Reasonable hours and a very hospitable atmosphere. I tend to do more hands-on activities so they understand that I can’t always dress formally. It’s the little things that matter.

What new skills were you able to learn/develop during your co-op/internship?

I’m still learning a lot on the job, how transit is managed and the whole corporate management lifestyle. I learned a lot of technical knowledge about onboard bus systems and on-street systems that very many people don’t realize.

How did your experience compare with your expectations?

I honestly didn't know what to expect going into this coop. I have a lot more free time than before, now that I’m not studying in the evenings and overall have more time to focus on what I like and what I want to do.

What was your proudest moment?

Completing a project that the previous student couldn't. Using the knowledge I just learned in an electronics course I was able to complete a testing device used to test presto machines in the field.

What advice would you offer to students thinking about pursuing co-op or internship?

Do it! People think that after graduation you will get a job with just a degree. The truth is it’s actually really hard to get a job without previous experience. Building that resume, especially with the help of the university goes a long way toward securing a job after graduation, even if you graduate a year later.
