FESNS stands for the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science. FEAS stands for the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. The two faculties are being merged, with FESNS becoming the Department of Energy and Nuclear Engineering within FEAS.

Why did the university decide to merge the two faculties?
The university has established itself as a national leader in clean energy and environmental sustainability research within industry and the higher education sector. The reconfiguration of the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) is an opportunity to further enhance the university’s prominence within the energy sector. This change will also strengthen our capacity for interdisciplinary research, teaching and learning, maximize academic and partnership opportunities, expand industry training, and most importantly, ensure our students have what they need to succeed.

When will the merger take effect?
The merger will take effect immediately, and many of the changes are already well underway. The university will use the summer months to establish FESNS as the Department of Energy and Nuclear Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS), providing time for faculty and staff to adapt to their new working environment prior to the start of the next academic term.

What changes can I expect with this merger?
FESNS will become the Department of Energy and Nuclear Engineering within FEAS effective immediately. Degree programs, courses, and the services provided by faculty and staff will remain unaffected.

I’ve registered for FESNS courses; do I need to re-register for FEAS courses?
No. There is no need to re-register or change your course registration. FESNS students will become FEAS students, and degree programs, courses, and the services provided by faculty and staff will remain unaffected.

Will some courses be cancelled as a result of this merger?
No, degree programs and courses will continue as planned.

I chose Ontario Tech because FESNS has an established reputation within the nuclear industry. How will the university ensure its reputation remains intact?
The university consulted with external partners prior to moving forward with the decision to reconfigure FESNS as the Department of Energy and Nuclear Engineering within FEAS. Ontario Tech offers the only Nuclear Engineering degree program in Canada, and the university will continue to work with industry partners to create experiential learning opportunities, develop research projects and train highly qualified personnel. The reconfiguration of FESNS is an opportunity to further enhance the university’s prominence within the energy sector by leveraging our expertise. This change will strengthen our capacity for interdisciplinary research, teaching and learning, maximize academic and partnership opportunities, expand industry training, and most importantly, ensure our students have what they need to succeed.

I visit the FESNS website for information. Where will I find the information I need?
Information found on the FESNS website will be moved to the FEAS website over the summer months. The FESNS URL (nuclear.ontariotechu.ca) will be redirected to the FEAS website (engineering.ontariotechu.ca) to ensure a seamless transition. You’ll be able to find information about academic advising and other services on the FEAS website.

I’m a graduate student. How will this affect my research project and my thesis?
Research projects and theses will not be affected by this change. Faculty supervisors will continue to oversee projects as usual. The only difference is they will now be FEAS faculty members.

Will this affect my internship, Capstone project or co-op?
The university has strong relationships with industry partners, and we will continue to nurture those relationships as well as develop new ones. Internships, Capstone projects and co-ops will continue as planned.

I’ve received an entrance scholarship as a FESNS student. What will happen to my scholarship now that FESNS is not its own faculty?
Scholarships are unaffected by the merger. Renewable scholarships will remain eligible for renewal.

I’m a FEAS student. Our academic advisors are already very busy. Now there will be more students in the faculty. How will the university address this?
Academic advisors have supported FEAS and FESNS jointly for over two years. There will be no change in the services provided to our students. Academic Advising will continue to have booked appointments and drop-in times.
