What motivated you to apply for co-op/Internship?
I was motivated to apply for a co-op/internship opportunity because of my deep interest and fascination with embedded programming and the workings of embedded systems. During my time working at Siemens in the Research and Development (R&D) division of the Ultrasonic and radar sensors, I gained invaluable experience and exposure to the world of microcontrollers. I was always interested in embedded programming and exploring the intricate details of microcontrollers which are generally used in everyday machines such as vending machines and small computers. This experience fascinated me greatly, and it became a driving force behind my desire to delve deeper into this field. I was always intrigued by how microcontrollers are programmed and the extent of their capabilities in controlling different devices and systems. My co-op at Siemens not only honed my technical skills but also fueled my curiosity about the endless possibilities within the stream of embedded systems. This motivation led me to seek out a co-op/internship opportunity where I could further expand my knowledge and contribute meaningfully to projects involving embedded programming.
Can you describe your position in a few sentences?
I had the privilege of working within the Research and Development division at Siemens, where I was actively engaged in the development of a new generation of Radar Sensor and a corresponding series of controllers. This role required proficiency in programming these advanced sensors, primarily utilizing the C programming language. Additionally, I played a pivotal role in supporting ancillary tasks for the internal team’s evolution. This encompassed the development of Python scripts and internal software solutions, as well as the implementation of automation testing systems such as Jenkins for comprehensive integration testing. These responsibilities not only deepened my technical expertise but also provided me with a holistic understanding of the intricate processes involved in cutting-edge technology development.
Did you receive training to perform your engineering duties? Please explain.
In the execution of my duties, I was afforded the opportunity to explore and navigate tasks independently. At each juncture where challenges arose, the supportive team was readily available to provide guidance and assistance. The work culture placed a strong emphasis on encouraging individuals to independently navigate and research their way through tasks. This approach fostered a culture of self-discovery and problem-solving, with guidance being offered when necessary, rather than overwhelming assistance and explanations right from the outset. This approach not only enhanced my problem-solving abilities but also instilled a sense of confidence in tackling complex tasks.
What was your work atmosphere like?
The work ethic within the organization was incredibly supportive and flexible, fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere. The team members were not only friendly but also enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge. Whenever I encountered new concepts or challenges, my colleagues were always willing to provide guidance and teach me the intricacies of the tasks at hand. Furthermore, the collaborative spirit was evident in the initiative taken by some colleagues who dedicated time on Fridays specifically to assist me in understanding different aspects of the company's code structure. In instances where I faced difficulties with specific tasks, I had the freedom to reach out to anyone with relevant expertise. Whether through a Teams call or a visit to their desk, they would patiently explain the intricacies of the issue, provide insights into the underlying concepts, and empower me to implement solutions independently. This supportive environment not only facilitated my learning but also reinforced a sense of camaraderie within the team, making the overall experience highly enriching and conducive to personal and professional growth. I was also guided on different future decisions like, my masters or my interests in specific job opportunities by their experience which was not related to my tasks.
What new skills were you able to learn/develop during your co-op/internship?
During my tenure, I had the opportunity to acquire a diverse set of technical skills, including expertise in embedded C, Jenkins, Canata, Python, Java, and Rhapsody, among others. This exposure allowed me to broaden my technical horizons and deepen my understanding of various programming languages and tools. Additionally, the experience provided an excellent platform for enhancing my soft skills. In the collaborative environment, I honed essential soft skills such as teamwork and time management. Working closely with my colleagues on intricate projects, I learned the importance of effective collaboration and communication, which are integral to successful teamwork. Furthermore, managing my tasks and responsibilities within the dynamic work environment taught me valuable time management skills. These soft skills, coupled with the technical expertise I gained, have significantly enriched my overall professional profile and prepared me for future challenges in the field.
How did your experience compare with your expectations?
My experience exceeded my initial expectations in every aspect. I began my journey with apprehension, uncertain about how I would transition into a professional work environment. I was concerned about how I would communicate with experienced team members and how I would navigate tasks with limited experience in a similar field. However, to my pleasant surprise, all these concerns dissipated within the first week itself. I found myself in an incredibly supportive environment where my team members welcomed me warmly and provided the necessary guidance. The inclusive atmosphere and their willingness to share knowledge and support me in my learning process made me feel right at home. Consequently, my initial fears transformed into a sense of comfort and confidence. This supportive atmosphere not only facilitated my professional growth but also made my overall experience exceptionally rewarding and enjoyable.
What was your proudest moment?
My proudest moment during my internship occurred during the biweekly feedback meetings with my manager. In these sessions, we engaged in a constructive and open dialogue, allowing for mutual feedback. I distinctly remember the moment when my manager expressed his satisfaction with my performance. He noted that I had fully grasped the intricacies of the tasks assigned to me. Hearing him acknowledge my efforts and witnessing his confidence in my abilities was incredibly gratifying. What made this moment even more special was the realization that the entire team was appreciative of the initiatives I took independently within the projects. Knowing that my contributions were not only recognized but also valued by both my manager and my colleagues filled me with a profound sense of pride and accomplishment. It reinforced my belief in the impact of proactive engagement and dedication in a professional setting.
What advice would you offer to current students thinking about pursuing co-op or internship?
I would like to offer a piece of advice to students embarking on a co-op experience: do not hesitate to ask for help when you need it. One of the key factors in my successful internship was my willingness to seek guidance whenever I encountered challenges. My manager not only appreciated but also praised my proactive approach of directly asking for assistance, rather than struggling in isolation and wasting valuable time. I encourage fellow students to make the most out of their co-op opportunities. Embrace every learning opportunity, engage with your colleagues, and absorb as much knowledge as you can. Co-op experiences are invaluable, and the skills and insights gained during this period can significantly shape your future career. When the time comes for your co-op to end, you will look back and realize how much you have grown both professionally and personally. Don't let the fear of making mistakes or asking questions hold you back. Take the initiative, be proactive, and give your 100%. You'll not only enhance your skills but also create memories and connections that will stay with you throughout your career.
