What motivated you to apply for Co-op/Internship

The possibilities of various workplace experiences in software development and management. The more I could understand my field, the better I would understand where I want to continue my schooling.

Can you describe your position in a few sentences?

My role is a combined role where I had the opportunity to take on the roles of business analyst, quality assurance, developer, software architect, and a bit of planning and management.

Did you receive training to perform your engineering duties? Please Explain.

Yes! At every step I was assigned a supervisor whom I shadowed and worked with for a bit before I did some tasks on my own. At every step, there was someone who had lots of experience whom I could talk to.

What was your work atmosphere like? (flexibility, formality, team centric, supportive)

As in most software development environments, hours are flexible as long as the work is completed and on time. The atmosphere is very supportive and helpful and very team-oriented, as projects are accomplished by a team lead on an agile approach.

What new skills were you able to learn/develop during your Co-op/Internship?

I further developed the skills I already possessed rather than learning some new skills. Which was a relief as I was prepared for the work I was given. I developed an array of skills learned in both university and life. For example, I was able to develop my programming skills, my organizational skills, as well as my editing, communication, managerial, writing, development, critical thinking & problem solving skills.

How did your experience compare with your expectations?

It was amazing and a lot more fun than I was anticipating. The openness and willingness of others to teach and talk about their personal experiences was eye opening. One of my favorite work places in my career so far and I was able to connect with many very talented people.

What was your proudest moment?

I have accomplished a lot of various work and tasks, there was not a singular moment that over shines the rest. My work produced steady good results of which my supervisor and team members were happy with.

What advice would you offer to current students thinking about pursuing Co-op/Internship?

Do it! You won't regret the experience. If you can, get a position where they can rotate you around various positions, or at least ask to shadow a few other positions for a few days. This way you get a better idea of the various projects, roles and positions in your field. Don't be afraid to ask anything either - most likely, your supervisor was a co-op or internship student themselves somewhere along the road.
