Mechatronics Engineering Student

4-month Co-op with Stackpole International

Jr. Engineering Specialist

What motivated you to apply for a co-op/internship?

I wanted to apply the theoretical knowledge learned in my program to solve real-life engineering problems.

Can you describe your position in a few sentences?

My position as Jr. Engineering Specialist revolves around the mechatronics field with a focus on mechanical engineering. I have prepared validation reports that will be used by technicians to test new products before they are sent out to end customers. I also focus on data verification for prototype testing. I am responsible for checking that manufacturers have produced the part based on the CAD designs and that dimensions are within tolerance. Once the pumps are assembled and tested, I visualize the data to be interpreted by designers and managers in the field to understand the benefits/ disadvantages of a given pump and how their specific design has impacted certain technical parameters.

Did you receive training to perform your engineering duties? Please explain.

I had done my research before coming to work in my position. I developed the fundamental knowledge through my engineering studies and supplemented that with my own research and certification courses on the internet.

What was your work atmosphere like?

The work environment is very supportive. Tasks are given to me by my manager and I am given the freedom to choose my method of completion as long as I meet the criteria. I can go to other engineers in my department for feedback and help if needed.

What new skills were you able to learn/develop during your co-op/internship?

AutoCAD Modelling, Data Visualization, Presentation Skills and Interpersonal Communication.

How did your experience compare with your expectations?

It was very similar to what I expected as I had done my research about the company and position prior to accepting my offer. I am learning a lot of new things on the job every week.

What was your proudest moment?

The proudest moment was when I first joined the job and was able to keep up with the terminology being used from day one as I had my research beforehand. I was able to pick up things quickly and perform my work duties well in order to impress my manager.

What advice would you offer to students thinking about pursuing co-op or internship?

I would encourage every student to apply for coop or internships. It enhances your outlook on the degree that you are currently studying for. You are able to see and solve problems in a real-world environment that you had only previously done theoretically. By getting work experience you are able to find your passions in your specific degree which might help you to decide what sub-field of your industry you would like to specialize in for your last year of studies.
