Mechanical Engineering Student

4 month Co-op at Flextronics Automotive

Mechanical Development Engineer

What motivated you to apply for Co-op/Internship

I really wanted to get some experience in my field.  Also I was starting to get bored of school and was looking for something that would re-ignite my interest.

Can you describe your position in a few sentences?

I mainly work with the mechanical team where we use CAD software to create, revise and evaluate product models. I have also been working with the test department where we design and build validation testers (to test the functionality of products coming through the production line).

Did you receive training to perform your engineering duties? Please explain.

I received basic site safety training as well as shop training. Since I work at the machine shop often, they trained me for shop safety as well as how to properly use various tools like drills, taps & belt sanders

What was your work atmosphere like? (Flexibility, formality, team-centric, supportive)

Facing outward the company maintains a very strict formal image. Internally the office is very relaxed and team focused. People here are very friendly and share each other's workload.

What new skills were you able to learn/develop during your Co-op/Internship?

I was able to develop my CAD skills; mainly learning Synchronous modelling in Nx and Analysis in Solidworks.  In addition, I have gained some hands-on experience in the shop using drills, lathes and other equipment.

How did your experience compare with your expectations?

This Internship so far has greatly exceeded my expectations. I thought it was going to be a boring desk job, but every day I'm doing something new and exciting.

What was your proudest moment?

I proposed a design for a CNC machine that will be built out of spare material on site.  My designs have been cleared and soon we'll start building it.

What advice would you offer to current students thinking about pursuing a Co-op/Internship?

If your grades aren't strong, focus on extra-curricular activities/projects (relevant to your field).  Employers look to hire students who have interest, drive and experience in their field, rather than "book smart" students.
