12 month Internship with OPG

Projects and Modification Intern

What motivated you to apply for Co-op/Internship

Ever since my first year of University, I always heard about the company Ontario Power Generation and that it was one of the best companies to work for in Ontario. I told myself that if one day I could make it into OPG, it would be a dream come true. I worked really hard over the past three years at University and when OPG hired me, all those tireless days and nights I spent on school work finally paid off.

Can you describe your position in a few sentences?

I am a Projects and Modifications Intern at the Ontario Power Generation. I am currently working on a Storage Building with my team to store Nuclear Waste.

Did you receive training to perform your engineering duties? Please Explain.

I didn't have much training on my engineering duties, but I did have one week of computer training to gain insight into the hazards associated in the Nuclear Industry and how to stay safe and be aware of them.

What was your work atmosphere like? (flexibility, formality, team centric, supportive)

The atmosphere at work is amazing, everybody is really nice and helpful. The working hours are great as well leading to a good work-life balance.

What new skills were you able to learn/develop during your Co-op/Internship?

Some of the skills I have developed would be to be more social at work as there are a lot of people you need to communicate with on a day to day basis, and when you are unsure of things you should always ask people. As well I would say time management is a big factor in terms of balancing the daily duties you have at work.

How did your experience compare with your expectations?

This internship has been beyond what I expected. It has really been a great experience so far. I am really happy to be working with this company and the people are amazing and very helpful.

What was your proudest moment?

When my team and myself signed a "memorandum of understanding" to one of the companies doing construction on the project I am working on. Due to the project being so massive, when we were able to get the memorandum signed by all the designated parties in order to get construction started, it was just a great feeling.

What advice would you offer to current students thinking about pursuing Co-op/Internship?

Personally I would recommend doing an internship or a co-op. There are a lot of things you can learn and I think the experience you gain is definitely an important aspect to add to your degree. You can see whether you really like what you are studying and how it can be applied to the workplace.
